Towards Ecologicalness

You’re warmly invited to join Towards Ecologicalness, a primer for working with Ecological Organisations: A Design Lens.

The underlying story of ecological organisations recognises organisations as deeply and necessarily entangled with place, neighbourhood, social systems, ecosystems, histories, cultural stories, possible futures, the more-than-human, this planet, and so much more. Which means that if we are going to travel towards ecologicalness, we have to travel together as a multicultural, multigenerational, multispecies endeavour.

The story rests on three premises:

1. All organisations are innately ecological in nature, and current systems mean that very few organisations can be ecological in practise. However, when we recognise that all organisations are innately ecological in nature, we start travelling towards being ecological in practise.

2. Since organisations are living systems, ongoing rearrangements of relationships, processes, outcomes, and actions, being ecological in practise is an ongoing unfolding with no arrival point.

3. Becoming ecological in practise is, then, likely the work of generations, and knowing this holds the invitation from future generations to start the work now.

During this primer, we'll spend time with the practise of ecological enquiry, the foundation that this work is rooted in, the practise of which will better equip you to work with the design lens. We'll then spend time exploring the design lens, meeting the eight areas of organisational enquiry the lens invites us into, and discovering how we might find the right pathway into the lens for each of us depending on our organisation's unique arrangement.

Towards Ecological Organisations is offered under my participation and refunds policy.

TRAVELLING TOWARDS ECOLOGICALNESS WITH ECOLOGICAL ORGANISATIONS: A DESIGN LENS.

ABOUT ECOLOGICAL ORGANISATIONS: A DESIGN LENS

The design lens is birthed from over ten years of study and experience working in systems thinking, design thinking, self-organisation, living systems, emergent strategy, organisational design, decentralised and participatory governance, organisations as commons, organisational stewardship, self- and shared-enquiry, animism, interbeing, and a multispecies kinship perspective (and more).

It is formed entirely of enquiry prompts, designed to guide organisational founders, leaders, and stewards to have closer relationships with the unique experiences, arrangements, languages, and stories within an organisation, from internal flows of relationship, care, information, and intelligence to how an organisation is attuning to and being within wider ecosystems and social systems.

The design lens has been applied in multiple organisations in multiple countries, including with students at the University of Portland, in a British museum, and within an organisation asking itself ‘what would Earth do?’.  In January 2026, it was introduced to 80+ senior charity leaders as part of Good Innovation’s Navigating Uncertainty: Lessons from Nature.

Shared freely as creative commons, there is an extensive online guidebook that houses the design lens in multiple formats, along with extensive educational materials and other support. This design lens, and the online guidebook has been entirely self-funded.

PARTICIPATION FIT

I have found that my way of travelling towards ecologicalness is generally a good fit for organisational founders, leaders, and stewards that:

  • Are drawn towards journeying, or already travelling, into the lands beyond the edges of how organisations are currently organised, and why.
  • Are at home relating to organisations, and all that organisations encompass, through an expansive and poetic lens while also rooting into current realities.
  • Recognise that organisational borders exist, and are a co-created story that isn't real.
  • Are curious about their and others’ experiences, language, cosmologies, stories, and assumptions, and willingly participate in challenging these (when helpful).
  • Enjoy being guided rather than being taught and contributing and co-creating rather than consuming.
  • Are leading organisations that are financially and culturally stable, so that this work isn't unhelpfully disruptive.

TOWARDS ECOLOGICALNESS WILL BRING YOU:

  • An introduction to ecological enquiry, the living, depthful study of the relationship between living things and their environment, and how living things act in and contribute to relationship, that underlies the design lens and that will equip you to better work with the design lens.
  • A lived experience of ecological tracing, an ecological enquiry practise that you can utilise to explore personal and organisation-wide worldviews and cosmologies, cultural framings, stories, and other lived experiences.
  • An introduction to the design lens, exploring the eight areas of the lens and how to start working with the lens within the unique arrangement of the organisation you’re a member of.
  • Time for dialogue with the author of the design lens, where you can bring your questions about ecological organisations, working with the design lens, and enquiry practises.
  • Post-session access to an introductory guide to working with the design lens, so that you can revisit the underlying theory and other information.
  • Access to a small group of fellow organisational leaders, founders, and stewards that are working towards becoming more ecological organisations (capped at 8 participants per session).

OTHERS’ WORDS ABOUT THE DESIGN LENS

'Ecological Organisations: A Design Lens is an incredible tool! I have shared it with my college students to help them explore their relationships with the land and holistic organisational dynamics. The EO lens allowed students to navigate the complexity of our regional systems with hope instead of despair, and inspired them to act locally within their own organisations. Anna-Marie is also a beautiful facilitator and guide of this work, and has been inspiring to work with.'

'I and some amazing colleagues of mine are in the early steps of creating an ecological organization and this is an amazing resource. Answers so many questions of ours and sets us in the right direction!’

'Wow. WTF. This is incredible. This is what we’ve been trying to do all along but didn’t have the framework for!’

‘An exceptional resource for ecological design (and planning) thinking, presented in the form of a beautiful, engaging, accessible infographic.’

‘Anna-Marie, this is amazing. Thank you for intuiting this incredible framework.’

‘A real contribution to all of us thinking of how organizations can evolve in healthy ways. A beautiful rendering of the dimensions.’

‘Wow! What a beautiful set of offerings, and framework for thinking about wholeness.’

‘Really, really gorgeous in every way.’

‘What a beautiful framework to pin lots of deeper insight to and in order to create more inner clarity, integrity and possibility. Thank you for sharing this.’
